These functional vases are made through a process of laser cutting and gluing rings of MDF by hand. Different visual effects are achieved through sanding by hand and using an electric sander. This process transforms MDF, considered a basic construction material, into refined, beautiful objects designed for domestic spaces.
These homeware objects are suitable to hold dried flowers or be situated on their own. Alternatively, vases in the "Botanical" series have been adapted to hold living plants thanks to a removable glass lining.
Sustainability is an important principle of Lucy's design practice, and she incorporates a range of mindful practices to uphold these values:
Lucy graduated with a high 2:1 in BA Art & Design at the University of Leeds. Her design practice is now based in North Somerset, where she grew up.
Her inspiration for this design method stemmed from observing traditional hand building techniques in pottery, such as coiling, in which tubes of clay are stacked on top of each other to build objects. Her visual designs were influenced by classic ceramic and wood turned forms, as well as abstract shapes.
Since graduating, Lucy has worked on two large scale commissions.
The first consisted of four large scale vases, made for the University of Leeds School of Design for office decoration and to be used on a film set.
Most recently Lucy has created 24 vases in three unique styles to accompany the interior decoration of a wedding.
